Valencia 22 Sept 2010

Here we go on our Team building and sales meeting trip to Valencia. Ian is coming with us as he & I are staying over for the weekend. well it seems a pity to waste a good hotel & Free flight. Only one other person Simone has the sense to do the same thing. We are staying in a 5 star hotel The Westin Valencia for 2 nights & then down grade to another hotel for 2 more nights.

It is only when we are on the plane that we find out that French air traffic controllers are on strike & we have an hour delay. Arrggh. It is a late arrival flight anyway so that is bad news. Hey ho we do arrive, bags are waiting for us, have a fight with some taxi drivers who will not accept credit cards & throw some of the girls suitcases out onto the road! Thanks goodness we had the foresight to take out some euro's.

The hotel however makes up for this is is really lovely & the room is massive, apparently our room is more massive than some others as we have a sofa & coffee table. We also have a dressing room, walk in shower and large bathroom. All are meeting down stairs in the courtyard, where it is a very warm & a starry night. We have a couple of drinks & listen to the fans in the nearby football stadium. Valencia are playing Althlectico Madrid & from the noise of the crowd it must be an exciting game. At 1.30 I drag Mr F away from his new friends ( I think he wants to work for Vocollect). It is a shame to leave as we all agree that socializing on a warm summers evening is the very best thing. I however have to get up at 7am for a meeting

Team Building

The aforementioned meeting finished around 12 noon. We left the Westin at around 12.30 and went in the direction of Madrid. It was warm in the city but overcast. We drove along the course of the old riverbed so had a good view of the gardens. After 2 hours we arrived at Vale de Moro it was raining and spirits were some what down. After a Spanish 20 mins (1 hour later) we arrived at the river Cabriel. I must however comment on the journey from Vale de Moro, it was a complete nightmare and on several occasions thought that we were all going to die. You hear about coaches crashing in these places well this was a recipe for disaster. Hairpin bends on a single track road on a 30 seater coach, driver going as fast as he can. (he is Spanish so that is FAST) There is some screaming and that is only the men, but you know when things got really scary as it went very quiet. We all felt quite queasy upon arrival. Some of the "team" did the rafting and some "me included" did not. We were told that we would be able to go down to the river & sunbathe ( UHH its raining & 16 degrees). We however had to sit in the coach for 2 hours & wait for the others to come back. Great. We were not allowed to go for a walk in case we got lost but I did have a wander down the track but came back rather quickly when I found the shedded skin of what I later identified as a Ladder Snake. We also saw some wild boar but that was from the safety of the coach. I am glad that I went with them as we got some good photos and I also got to see some great scenery. Lots of vines and olives but strangely no Oranges.

Some very wet and sorry looking people got back on the coach and endured the 2 hour journey back. They had a great time but not sure if the traveling time was worth it.
Straight in to the hotel, shower & back out for dinner at 9.30, unless you were smart & found the boys in the bar who just happened to buy you a glass of Verve Clique. We had a great meal in a lovely place, not Spanish but great for the occasion & suited all tastes. I made my escape & got back to the hotel around midnight. Some people got back "early" at 4am some got back at 4.45.
The meeting started the next day at 8.30 there were some late comers and some very green faces. All of these people had a flight home at 14.00hours I did not envy them one bit. But have been there done that and probably have some scars to prove it, or know someone that has! Yes I am glad that I am older & a bit wiser on these occasions.

Ian had a nice day to himself although it was not sunny but was nice & hot.

Holiday time! Hurrah

I still cant believe it but the meeting finished on time. Even Mr F did not think that it would & had to be summonsed from his sunbathing in the Turia Gardens nearby. After a hasty get away, Ian, Simone & I went off to find our hotels, after a bit of a walk in the hot sun and a bit of going round in circles we were all sorted out. Our Hotel is near the station, a small room compared to the Westin but then again what would'nt be? The Zenit hotel is modern has great aircon & very important for a city hotel soundproofing. Having said that Valencia is one of the quietest cities I have been in.
We all needed something to eat so headed off towards the old city and found a nice restaurant where we had a great mixed paella complete with snails. Even with her hangover Simone still tried one! Mr F had some lager which turned out to be very expensive and I still have not heard the end of it! Simone went off to catch up on some sleep & we traipsed around, sat in the sun, Went back to the hotel to find the sun roof only to find out they did not have one. I am now feeling rather tired & things are in danger of turning nasty if I don't get some rest, but it is too nice to take to my bed so we go out & sit in the sun in one of the squares. 36 degrees is too hot even for me & its not long before I am sitting in the shade but feeling more relaxed. We tour around a bit more, stopping off at Baldo for a beer & cava (which we later found out that we were not charged for, but still does not make up for the daylight robbery earlier). Back to the hotel for a quick shower & change then out to enjoy the nightlife.

We head up to the old city again in the hope of finding a good Tapa bar as we ate quite well at lunch time, we walked & walked until I could hardly stand, my feet were singing. We had some tapa which were fine for me but Mr F not impressed. We had some padron peppers which are small fried green peppers very nice, but one in about 11 will burn your mouth out. thats what makes them exciting to eat its like Spanish roulette! However no hot ones tonight.

We were early to bed due to the lack of sleep for me over the past 2 nights, the aircon was on high & I was hope full of a decent sleep. I remember hearing some slight disturbance & shuffling in the night and put it down to Ian going to the loo. However at 6.30 I am woken up as I am freezing cold, I turn over but cannot get warm, I think If I am cold Ian must be freezing I try to turn down the aircon but the room is pitch black & I cannot see what I am doing. Ian then wakes up so I turn on the light. He is wrapped up in a t shirt, the small bed cover from the foot of the bed and some towels from the bathroom. After finding him some blankets which he piled on top of him he went back to sleep for a couple of hours. later on he told me that in the dark he had put on one of my tops in error and pulled the frame work of the wardrobe off the wall. Me I never heard a thing, but might have been a bit worried if I had woken up to find him wearing my clothes.
At 7.30 I woke up as it was raining - great. By 8.30 it was bright sunshine and we got up a set off for another day sightseeing.
1st stop was the market, which was bustling. very fresh produce and very cheap, the fish was so fresh & so much to choose from. I think that you could buy almost anything to cook there it was quite inspirational.
We wanted to go to a restaurant that we had read up about. Legendary for its authentic food and difficulty to find. We walked and walked up & down all the streets looking, about 2 hours later I had located the correct area but still could not find it. Just turned on our heels to give up when Ian looked back & saw it out of the corner of his eye. It was still quite early to eat in Spanish terms so we decided to have a drink to allow our feel to cool down a bit. The place lived up to both legends very authentic, food cooked by a mama & patronised by locals. We had seafood paella to start then Ian had mixed fish, I had the lamb de casa. A bottle of the cool house white went down very well. Mr F had some semolina type pud. The bill €35 - the wine was only €5 but very good ( Still does not make up for the rip off beer !!)
We then walked up to the Turia gardens, along to the Torres de Serranos and back into the main city. Stopping along the way to take photos, visit churches, see 2 weddings and one Mass and I am sure lots of other things that I have forgotten.
Quick change then back out, a glass of cava to start the evening at Baldo then a bit of a tour to find some where to eat. We settle on a place and then fear its going to be rip of time but no worries. We had a great plate of Serrano ham & cheese followed by seafood fidua. Lovely. Late to bed to night 12.30 well we had to make the most of it & it is so warm shame to go indoors. I forgot to say that earlier walking up a street I noticed a digital clock - they are all over the city. It said it was 3.30, after a few minutes I noticed another one that also said 3.30 strange. Until I realised that it was 33 degrees and 15.45!!
I was woken up the next morning by Ian, it was very dark until Ian drew back the curtains and the blazing sun poured into the room it was 9.00am. I had slept all night.

Torres de Serranos.

A quick cafe con leche and tostada a bit of a walk in the sun then onto the metro to the airport.

The metro was right by the hotel, it took 25 minutes to get to the airport & cost €4.80 for the 2 of us compared to the €26 for a taxi. It is easy to get to & from the airport straight tube lines & Easy Jet was very good. Recomendado the whole thing!

Jardins de Turia

These gardens were created after the river Turia was diverted after it flooded the city back in 1957. This is one of the longest parks in Valencia and has cafes, childrens parks, gardens, football pitches and ultmately leads to the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciencies. City of Arts & Sciences.

Mercado Central

We could have spent all day here, the 2nd picture down is one of the snail sellers!

Horchata is a Valencian drink made from tiger nuts (Chufas) A must to have with this drink is a farton, yes a farton. They are long thin sugar iced buns. You dip your farton in your horchata, both are very sweet but the horchata is icy cold and very refreshing.

Mr F is now after a paella pan burner!

A Great Birthday weekend

Mr F is another year older but according to him & to steal a line from Jon "Has still got it". The four of us went to The Pot kiln for a fabulous lunch. It was a very sunny day and despite the mad dash to get there on time, the Scotts were late courtesy of traffic problems in Byfleet & the usual on the M25. We sat outside until our table was ready & then there was much deliberation & indecision as to what to eat.

Starters were Mackerel fillets with a green salsa, Cornish Mussels in Cider & cream & Mr F had pigeon breast. We then shared a haunch of Muntjac deer marinated in herbs and grilled, served with new pots a sublime red cabbage and carrots, Sarah had the mushroom risotto with various local mushrooms and Jon had the Fallow Deer T bone, which came with Venison sausages and the aforementioned red cabbage. Not a scrap of food was left it really was excellent & the service as usual was impeccable. Some St Clair 2007 Pinot Noir helped the meal along & then Jon & Ian had a plum sundae which was just perfect. Sweet and tart plums with rich cream and crunchy biscuit crumble all layered in a sundae glass. It was delicious.

Back to Marlow & the birthday boy opened his lovely presents, favorite were the marmite crisps & case of Adnams beer. Seriously he had some great presents which I am sure he will be sending all concerned his thanks.

We then had a few glasses of fizzy stuff, sitting in the summerhouse until it was very dark. We then decided that we would set off some of the Chinese sky lanterns that we had. Hmmm, Sarah was very excited,so were the boys seeing it involved setting fire to something. I was rather concerned, seeing as a few beverages had been consumed by this point and it involved fire.
Firstly the lanterns are twice the size that you think they are going to be, secondly the fuel cell blazes away quite fiercely. The first one went up really without a hitch and floated a long way off towards Bourne End before it burnt out. The second one was a different story as we let it go it just made it over the top of the lean to and then sank down into next doors garden. Horror, this bright red flaming lantern was floundering around on the patio & round the side of the house before with much relief we saw it clear the roof & set off in the same direction as the first. The 3rd and much to Sarah's disappointment last, just scraped over the bushes in the garden before making towards the trees. By this time I was beside myself and had visions of the fire brigade being called and enraged neighbours. However it cleared the trees and sailed off until it went all "ziggy zaggy" and burnt out. Phew. Next time we must make sure we are in more open ground.

On Sunday after much debate which pub to go to, we decide against the Blacksmith & Shoe Horn (You had to be there) and went to the Chequers instead.

As I said when I started this it was a truly great weekend.

September 10th 2010

Today was our 22nd wedding anniversary, so we took a couple of days off work to make a long weekend of it and drove up to north Norfolk. After much researching we had found a nice pub with accommodation, The Crown Inn at East Rudham part of the Flying Kiwi Inns chain. It is Norfolk's dining pub of the year so we are expecting some good food.

Our journey was delayed a while by me having an extended visit to the dentist - great way to start a holiday! It was very overcast & drizzly although the temperature was about 18-19. It always takes longer to get to Norfolk than you think but we got there in time for a spot of lunch, book into our room and start to relax.

One of the reasons we went to Norfolk was to see an event that only takes place at very high tides, this is when all the wading birds out on the mud flats get pushed onto the land by the tides coming right in. 50 to 70 thousand of them can be seen wheeling overhead it is a spectacular sight & sound. We leave the cosiness of the pub and venture off, as I said before it is warm but there is a strong wind and we are heading right out onto the wash so we are prepared for some cold if not wet weather. A weasel ran across the road in front of us on the way there.

The walk to the viewing places and the mud flats is about a half hour from the car park. To my right is what I think to be a river, it is full! High tide?? Oh dear, I say to Ian I think that I may have made a mistake with the timings as it appears that the tide is in. I am waiting to a rebuff as I am well known for getting my 24 hour clock timings wrong. He seemed to be quite happy though & we carried on. After climbing up a sea wall we saw the mudflats and the tide was out, and when I say out I mean out. It was flippin miles away. It was about 5 o clock, about the time that the alleged RSBP walk was to take place. We walked along, took some brooding photos, I found the place to be almost sinister with its greyness and silence, quite eerie.
We watched as the sea came nearer and the birds came nearer, some flocks of black tailed Godwits flew into the lagoons behind the sea wall ( that was what I thought to be a river) and some large flocks of geese gathered in the field nearby. It was getting nearer to 7pm and we had a table booked for dinner and really were not sure of how to get back to the pub as we had come a rather circuitous route. The sea was still flippin miles out I guess it would have been nearer 9 to 10 pm before the tide came close enough. On the way back we met a couple who told us the walks are always in the morning!! Wry smiles, but hey we would never had made it at 5am.

We got back to the Crown with just time to freshen up & get down to the bar for a glass of champagne before dinner. We enjoyed our meal although the service between courses was very slow - but it is a chilled out place so no major hassle for us. we had a bottle of New Zealand Pinot Noir which soothed us after a busy and some what frustrating day.

A night at the Crown Inn East Rudham is £125 Dinner Bed & Breakfast for 2 and they take single night bookings even at weekends. Its a steal! 3 courses and homemade bread & butter, the staff are delightful and the rooms are very contempory and comfortable. Perhaps not such a bargain if you are not staying but well worth a visit.
