We had a poor nights sleep in the main due to it being too warm & the noise of the traffic on the nearby road. It was raining when we woke up so it rather put a dampener on things to coin a phrase. What to do stay or go home?? The weather forecast made our decision, brightening up and becoming sunny early afternoon & evening. Full sun tomorrow. Much happier we make our way downstairs to ask if we can stay another night. Alas there is no room at the inn - boo. However the lovely Roxy rings around all the other Kiwi hotels for us (all fully booked) but she manages to get us a room in the B&B over the road. We scoff down a good cooked breakfast, take our clothes & bags and leave them in the front room of Mulberry Tree House with a rather bewildered Landlady. We really were not that interested in where we were staying just wanting to make the most of the day & not waste time looking for a bed!
We head off towards the north coast stopping off at Brancaster to look at the Ship Hotel - another one of the Kiwi inns. This is next on our list of places to stay next time we visit Norfolk. We also stop off to have a look at the White Horse at Brancaster Staithe, resist the temptation to call in at Morston hall but shout hi to Galton as we pass.
We drive on to Cley marshes where there is a great nature reserve. We go to the centre and see if there are any walks for today but there none. We start off & go to the first hide where we have great difficulty in identifying some small wading birds as they all look the same to us. We are told there is a Wryneck (V Special) up by the sea wall, and some Spoonbills further on by the big pool. Also 7 Lapland buntings have also been seen. Off we trot to see what we can. We did not see the Wryneck but had great views of the Lapland Buntings whilst all the Twitchers were down the other end of the beach looking for them. We also saw the Spoonbills and quite a few Marsh Harriers. I will add all the birds to my life list.
The day did turn out sunny and warm, we walked for about 6 hours on & off stopping for photos & to enjoy the surroundings and fab sky. We had a cup of tea & a rather large & strange scone ( It had glace cherries in much to Mr F's disgust) in the centre, before putting the roof down on the Saab & driving to the White Horse for a snifter whilst watching the sun go down.
A quick change of clothes and back over the road to the Crown for our well earned dinner. The service was slow but it is a chilled atmosphere there and we were in no hurry. Our room at Mulberry house was enormous. Nice big bed, a dressing room and on suite. Mullberry Tree House is a very old Georgian House, very large with loads of character, twisty staircases & huge rooms with great stuffed sofas. Fortified with Pinot Noir we fell into bed and a deep sleep, waking after 8am.
